How these numbers are modelled
  • Fee base: eBay charges its percentage on the total amount of the sale: item price, shipping you charge the buyer and sales tax. Enter the sales tax rate your buyer pays to include the tax; it is passed on to the tax authority and is not part of your payout.
  • Shipping: if you offer 1-day or international shipping next to a cheaper domestic option, eBay uses the cheapest domestic option for the fee. Enter that shipping charge.
  • Per item: the category thresholds ($7,500 and so on) apply to each item. For quantity above 1 the calculator models identical items at the average amount per item and charges the per-order fee once.
  • Whole sale or slices: handbags, jewelry, bullion and athletic shoes switch to a different rate for the whole sale once it crosses their threshold; the other categories charge each slice of the price at its own rate. The price needed to reach your target can therefore jump at a threshold, and the reverse calculator checks every side of it.
  • Not modelled: eBay Store subscriptions and Store rates, vehicles and other categories not in the list, NFT and business-equipment rates, the Below Standard and Item Not As Described surcharges, reserve and listing upgrade fees, dispute fees, shipping labels. Promoted Listings uses the rate you type in because eBay publishes no fixed rate.

How it is calculated

Total amount of the sale = item price x quantity + shipping you charge + sales tax collected from the buyer (eBay charges its fee on the tax too). Final value fee = category rate x total amount of the sale, worked out per item: most categories 13.6% up to $7,500 and 2.35% on the part above it; handbags, jewelry and bullion switch to a different rate for the whole sale once it passes their threshold. Per-order fee = $0.30 if the order total is $10.00 or less, $0.40 if it is over (none on athletic shoes at $150 or more). Optional lines: insertion fee, international fee, currency conversion, Promoted Listings (your own rate x item price + shipping). Every line is rounded to the cent. Net payout = item price x quantity + shipping charged - fees (sales tax goes to the tax authority). Profit = net payout - item cost x quantity - shipping you pay.

All math runs in your browser; nothing you type is sent to our server. Each line is rounded to the cent and amounts are shown in the currency of the selected country, never mixed.

What eBay takes from one order

eBay does not charge one flat percentage. A sale is split into a final value fee, a per-order fee and a few optional lines, and each is calculated on the total amount of the sale. The calculator shows every line separately so the total adds up exactly, and each line is rounded to the cent.

  • Final value fee. A percentage of the total amount of the sale. In most categories it is 13.6% up to $7,500 per item, then 2.35% on the part above.
  • Per-order fee. $0.30 if the order total is $10.00 or less, $0.40 if it is over.
  • Insertion fee. $0.35 per listing once you pass your 250 free listings a month.
  • International fee. 1.65% when you do not use eBay International Shipping.
  • Currency conversion. 3.25% when eBay converts your funds.
  • Promoted Listings. A rate you choose, applied here to item price plus shipping.

The fee base is bigger than your price

eBay charges its fee on item price, buyer-paid shipping and the sales tax the buyer pays. Take a $20 book with $4 shipping and 8% sales tax: the buyer pays $25.92 in all, of which $1.92 is tax. The final value fee is $3.97 and the order fee $0.40, so fees are $4.37. You receive $19.63, because the tax goes on to the tax authority. Many calculators ignore the tax and understate your fee.

Worked examples

A normal mid-price sale. An item at $50.00 with $8.00 shipping you charge and $8.00 postage you pay, bought for $20.00. The fee base is $58.00. The final value fee is $7.89, the order fee $0.40, total fees $8.29 and your payout $49.71. After the $20.00 item cost and $8.00 postage, profit is $21.71, a 37.43% margin.

The $10 line. At $8.00 the fees are $1.39 and you keep $6.61. At exactly $10.00 the fees are $1.66 and you keep $8.34. At $10.01 the order fee jumps to $0.40, fees are $1.76 and you keep $8.25. One cent costs you ten.

The handbag cliff. A handbag at $2,000.00 pays 15%, a final value fee of $300.00, so you keep $1,699.60. At $2,000.01 the rate is 9% for the whole sale, a fee of $180.00, and you keep $1,819.61. Pricing just over the line can leave you better off by about $120.

Jewelry works the same way. At $5,000.00 the fee is $750.00. At $5,001.00 it is $450.09.

Sneakers. At $149.99 the fee is $20.40 plus the $0.40 order fee, $20.80 in all, and you keep $129.19. At $150.00 it is $12.00 with no order fee, so you keep $138.00.

Everything switched on. A $100.00 item with $10.00 shipping, an extra listing, an international sale, currency conversion and a 5% promoted rate: fees are $26.61 and your payout is $83.39.

Price to list for your target

Fill in the profit you want per order or the margin you want. The reverse result searches for the lowest price at which the whole fee stack, including the per-order step and any category cliff, still leaves that profit. Because fees jump at $10 and at some category thresholds, a simple formula can give a wrong answer.

Traps to watch

  • Fees are charged on the tax, so a high-tax state costs you more.
  • The per-order fee is per order, not per item. Two $5 items bought together are one $0.30 fee.
  • Cliff categories (handbags, jewelry, bullion, athletic shoes) change the rate for the whole sale. Watches, parts and accessories instead step down in slices: 15% up to $1,000, 6.5% from $1,000 to $7,500 and 3% above.
  • Buyers do not pay these fees. They are all taken from the seller.

What this calculator does not model

  • Store subscription fees and Store rates.
  • Below Standard and item not as described surcharges, and the $20 dispute fee.
  • Optional listing upgrades such as reserve price, subtitle and bold.
  • Motors vehicles, eBay Live, NFTs and heavy equipment, which have their own fee pages.
  • The shipping exceptions eBay lists for the final value fee. If you offer 1-day or international shipping next to a cheaper domestic option, eBay bases the fee on your cheapest domestic option, so enter that shipping charge. Other exceptions for sellers outside the US are not modelled.
  • Income tax, shipping labels and returns.

Frequently asked questions

What percentage does eBay take from a sale?

For most categories the final value fee is 13.6% of the total amount of the sale up to $7,500 per item and 2.35% on the part above that, plus a per-order fee of $0.30 on orders of $10.00 or less and $0.40 on orders over $10.00. Some categories differ: books, movies and music 15.3%, coins and paper money 13.25%, trading cards and comics 13.25%, guitars and basses 6.7%. Rates checked October 26, 2026 on the selling fees page of eBay.

Does eBay charge its fee on shipping and sales tax?

Yes. eBay states that the total amount of the sale includes the item price, any handling charges, shipping costs collected from the buyer (some exceptions apply), sales tax and other applicable fees, and the percentage fee is calculated on that total. This calculator puts shipping and sales tax in the fee base. One exception matters for most sellers: if you offer 1-day or international shipping as well as a cheaper domestic option, eBay bases the total amount of the sale on your cheapest domestic option, so enter that shipping charge (checked October 26, 2026).

What is the per-order fee?

It is $0.30 when the order total is $10.00 or less and $0.40 when it is over $10.00. It is charged once per order, not once per item. An order is everything the same buyer buys at checkout with the same shipping method. Athletic shoes sold for $150 or more have no per-order fee (checked October 26, 2026).

How many free listings do I get?

eBay lists up to 250 zero insertion fee listings per month for sellers without a Store. Beyond that the insertion fee is $0.35 per listing in most categories. Guitars and basses have no insertion fee. Tick the insertion fee box when a listing is over your free allowance (checked October 26, 2026).

Is there a PayPal fee on eBay?

No separate PayPal fee is modelled. The percentage of the total sale amount plus the per-order fee are the charges eBay publishes on its selling fees page, so the calculator has no separate processing line. Use the per-order fee line for the fixed part.

What is the eBay international fee?

eBay charges 1.65% of the total amount of the sale when the item is not shipped with eBay International Shipping and either delivery or the buyer registered address is outside the US. There is no such fee when you use eBay International Shipping. Tick the international box to add it (checked October 26, 2026).

What are the fees for handbags, jewelry and sneakers?

Women's Bags & Handbags pay 15% if the sale is $2,000 or less and 9% if it is over $2,000. Jewelry & Watches (not parts) pay 15% up to $5,000 and 9% over. Athletic shoes pay 13.6% under $150 and 8% from $150, with no per-order fee at $150 or more. For handbags and jewelry the new rate applies to the whole sale, so the fee drops sharply once you cross the line (checked October 26, 2026).

What happens to the fee above $7,500?

In most categories the rate falls to 2.35% on the portion of an item above $7,500. At exactly $7,500 the final value fee is $1,020.00. At $7,600 it is $1,022.35. Bullion works differently: 13.6% if the sale is $7,500 or less and 7% if it is over, applied to the whole sale (checked October 26, 2026).

What is the Below Standard surcharge?

eBay adds 6% (7% after four consecutive months) of the applicable final value fees for sellers rated Below Standard, and 5% (6% after four months) for a Very High rate of item not as described. They do not stack, and Below Standard wins. They are not included in the calculator, so add them to the fee total if they apply (checked October 26, 2026).

Does an eBay Store change these fees?

Store subscribers have separate fee pages. This calculator models the standard seller rates only, so check the Store page if you have a subscription (checked October 26, 2026).
