Where do you keep the most on the same item?
A $50.00 item. On eBay, Mercari, Depop and Whatnot the buyer pays $8.00 shipping and you pay $8.00 for the label; on Poshmark the buyer pays Poshmark's flat shipping rate and you pay nothing extra. No item cost, no promotions, no sales tax, standard category and the first Whatnot sales tier. Calculated live from the same rates the calculators use.
| Marketplace | Total fees | You keep |
|---|---|---|
| Depop | $2.36 | $47.64 |
| Mercari | $5.80 | $44.20 |
| Whatnot | $5.98 | $44.02 |
| eBay | $8.29 | $41.71 |
| Poshmark | $10.00 | $40.00 |
Fees are only part of the picture: reach, sell-through and how fast an item sells differ a lot between marketplaces. Your own numbers will differ with category, tier, promotions and costs, so run the calculator for your item.
How the resale calculators work
Each marketplace stacks its fees differently, and the base each one charges on is not always the obvious one. eBay charges a percentage of the total amount of the sale, which includes shipping and sales tax, plus a per-order fee that steps up above $10. Mercari charges 10% of the item price plus the shipping the buyer pays. Depop charges US sellers no selling fee but takes payment processing on item, shipping and taxes. Whatnot charges a commission on the item price that depends on your category and your sales in the last four weeks, plus processing on the whole order. Poshmark takes a flat amount under $15 and a percentage from $15. Each calculator puts those rules on separate lines, rounded to the cent, so you can see where the money goes.
Every calculator also works backwards. Enter the profit or margin you want and it returns the price to list at, searching every fee threshold, because on eBay's handbag and jewelry categories and on Poshmark the fee changes at a price point and the answer can jump. Rates are stored with the official page they came from and the date they were checked, and both are printed under each calculator. We never copy rates from other calculators, and where a marketplace's own wording leaves a question open, the page says which assumption we made.
