Etsy Offsite Ads Fee Explained With an Example
Updated Oct 25, 2026 · 4 min read
Etsy charges 15% of the order total on Offsite Ads orders for shops under $10,000 USD in the prior 365 days and 12% once a shop reaches that amount, never more than $100 USD per order, when a buyer clicks an ad and orders within 30 days. A $35 order pays $5.25 at 15%.
The Offsite Ads fee is the one that surprises sellers most, because it is not a fee you choose per order. It appears when a buyer who clicked an Etsy ad somewhere else on the internet buys from your shop, and it can take a larger share of an order than every other Etsy fee combined. This guide explains the rules, with worked examples you can check yourself.
The rules, from Etsy's fee page
Etsy's Fees & Payments Policy and the help article on how Offsite Ads work set out the following, as checked on 25 October 2026:
- The standard fee is 15% of the order on attributed orders.
- If your shop made $10,000 USD or more over the prior 365 days, you pay 12% on attributed orders from then on.
- The fee on a single order never exceeds $100 USD.
- An order is attributed when a buyer clicks an offsite ad and buys within a 30-day window.
- The fee base is the order total: item price, shipping and gift wrapping, and outside the US any taxes included in the price.
These come on top of the listing fee, the transaction fee and the payment processing fee. Rates outside the US are quoted in USD, so the $100 cap in another currency depends on the exchange rate Etsy uses.
Worked example: a $35 order
A US seller sells a $35 item with free shipping. The order total is $35.00. The usual fees are $0.20 listing, $2.28 transaction (6.5% of $35.00, rounded) and $1.30 processing (3% of $35.00 plus $0.25), so $3.78. Without an ad she keeps $31.22, or 89.2%.
If the order was attributed to Offsite Ads and her shop is under $10,000 USD, the fee is 15% of $35.00, which is $5.25. Fees are $9.03 and she keeps $25.97, or 74.2%. At the 12% rate the extra fee is $4.20 and she keeps $27.02. In either case the ad fee is bigger than all the other fees on the order together. That is why a modest item can end up with a thin margin: take $8 of materials, $5 of postage and 20 minutes of time off $25.97 and not much remains. You can run your own numbers in the Offsite Ads calculator and the profit calculator.
Worked example: where the cap bites
A buyer orders an $800 item with $20 shipping, so the order total is $820.00. At 15% the calculation gives $123.00, but the cap limits the fee to $100.00, which is 12.2% of the order. At 12% the fee is $98.40, under the cap. The cap equals the fee at order totals of about $666.67 (15%) and $833.33 (12%), so only larger orders benefit.
Opt-out rules in plain language
Etsy lets shops below the $10,000 USD threshold opt out of Offsite Ads, so they are not charged the fee. Once a shop has made $10,000 USD or more over the prior 365 days, Etsy states it will pay the 12% fee on attributed orders from then on, which is why large sellers describe being stuck in the programme. Because eligibility depends on your own sales history, check your shop settings and Etsy's help article before deciding. If your shop is near the threshold, remember the 12% rate is lower than the 15% rate, so crossing it also reduces the percentage.
Deciding whether the ad is worth it
Compare the fee with your profit, not with revenue. If an ad order at 15% still leaves a healthy margin in the profit calculator, the sales are probably worth having. If not, you have three levers: raise prices, using the margin calculator to see by how much, accept the thinner margin on ad orders, or opt out if you are eligible.
If you think a charge is wrong
Find the Offsite Ads row for the order on your monthly statement, check it against 15% or 12% of the order total and the cap, and contact Etsy support with the order number and date if it does not match, asking which ad click the order was attributed to. Seller reports suggest the evidence you get can be limited, so keep your own record of fees per order.

Frequently asked questions
What is the Etsy Offsite Ads fee?
A fee on orders Etsy attributes to its advertising away from Etsy. It is 15% of the order total for shops that made less than $10,000 USD in the prior 365 days and 12% for shops that have reached $10,000 USD or more, capped at $100 USD per order.
Can I opt out of Offsite Ads?
Etsy lets shops under the $10,000 USD threshold opt out. Once a shop has made $10,000 USD or more over the prior 365 days, Etsy states it will pay the 12% fee on attributed orders afterwards, so opting out stops being possible. Check your own settings and the Etsy help article for your status.
What is the 30-day attribution window?
If a buyer clicks one of Etsy's offsite ads and buys from your shop within 30 days of that click, Etsy counts the order as attributed and charges the fee, even if the buyer returned directly.
Is the Offsite Ads fee charged on shipping?
It is a percentage of the order total, which includes the item price, shipping and gift wrapping. Outside the US it also includes any taxes included in the price.
How do I check an Offsite Ads charge?
Find the Offsite Ads row for that order on your monthly statement, compare it with 15% or 12% of the order total, and remember the $100 cap. If it does not match, contact Etsy support with the order number.
